(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – November 1, 2024) — El Paso ISD Float Nurse Grace Carbajal has been named the 2024 Texas School Nurse of the Year, an esteemed recognition from the Texas School Nurses Organization (TSNO). Carbajal will receive her state award at the annual TSNO Conference, held November 2-3 in Frisco, Texas. 

This honor follows Carbajal’s selection as the Region 19 School Nurse of the Year in May 2024, a testament to her dedication and commitment to student health. With over 30 years of nursing experience, 17 of which have been dedicated to school nursing, Carbajal has been a vital part of the El Paso ISD community since 2022. In her role as a float nurse, she provides care and support to students across various campuses and grade levels. 

“I’m deeply humbled and honored to receive this award,” Carbajal said. “I feel blessed to represent all the great school nurses who work diligently every day. Being a school nurse is about more than just healthcare—it’s about supporting students in every aspect of their lives. Whether it’s medical care, mentorship, teaching them on how to take care of themselves, I strive to make a positive impact on each student I encounter.” 

Throughout her career, Carbajal has provided a holistic approach to nursing, ensuring that students’ physical and emotional well-being are prioritized. Her work extends beyond the clinic; she’s volunteered at Muscular Dystrophy camps and served as a clinical group supervisor during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Carbajal’s journey to this recognition highlights her passion for nursing and the importance of school health services. “As school nurses, we’re on the front lines of student health, serving as a bridge between health care and the education system, working in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team supporting academic success, promoting health and safety, providing care, enhance student character building and being there for students when they need it most. It’s a role I’m proud to serve,” she said. 

El Paso ISD congratulates Grace Carbajal on this remarkable achievement and wishes her continued success as she represents the district and Region 19 at the state level.
