(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – November 20, 2024) — The El Paso Independent School District (El Paso ISD) Board of Trustees approved the Destination District Redesign (DDR) recommendations, a transformative initiative to improve educational outcomes and secure the district's financial future. Central to the plan is the closure of eight underutilized elementary schools over the next two academic years, a move designed to address a projected $32.2 million budget deficit for fiscal year 2025–2026 while preserving and enhancing academic excellence.

Approved School Closures

Phase I (2025–2026):

1. Carlos Rivera Elementary

2. Lamar Elementary

3. Newman Elementary

4. Putnam Elementary

5. Rusk Elementary

6. Zavala Elementary

Phase II (2026–2027):

7. Stanton Elementary

8. Travis Elementary

"Ultimately, this is about providing sustainable, high-quality education by addressing the deficit, preserving essential programs, and creating enriched, equitable learning environments for all students,” said Superintendent Diana Sayavedra.

A Plan for Equity and Excellence

El Paso ISD has committed to a comprehensive transition plan to minimize disruption and prioritize the needs of impacted students, families, and staff. Key components include:

• Equitable Student Placement: Students will transition to sister schools that provide enhanced academic opportunities, ensuring continuity and equity in their education.

• Investments in Receiving Schools: Targeted improvements will be made at sister campuses, including additional staff, expanded academic programs, and upgraded facilities to accommodate increased enrollment.

• Support Services for Families: The district will provide personalized support, including counseling, community meetings, and one-on-one assistance, to guide families through the transition.

• Ongoing Monitoring: El Paso ISD will track progress and ensure that all students receive equitable access to high-quality education and resources.

“Our priority is to empower every student and employee with the tools they need to succeed,” said Board President Israel Irrobali. “This plan is designed to provide all children with enriched opportunities and the resources they deserve.”

Community-Driven Decisions

The DDR plan reflects months of robust community engagement and data analysis. Adjustments were made based on stakeholder input, including the removal of Park and Hillside Elementary from the closure list and the deferral of Travis and Stanton closures to the 2026–2027 school year.

Building a Stronger Future

El Paso ISD understands the challenges these changes pose and is committed to ongoing collaboration with the community to ensure a smooth transition.

“This is not just about closing schools; it’s about building stronger, more equitable opportunities for every child in El Paso ISD,” added Superintendent Sayavedra.
