Students smile with new jackets on

(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – December 3, 2024) — As temperatures drop in El Paso, students at Magoffin Middle School are staying warm thanks to a collaborative effort between El Paso ISD, the Underserved Communities Foundation, and the foundation’s partners. The partnership provided 75 jackets to students in need, ensuring they are prepared for the winter season.

The event, held on December 4 at Magoffin Middle School, was made possible through a peer-to-peer fundraising campaign initiated by the Underserved Communities Foundation and supported by local organizations. School counselors identified students who could benefit most from the donation, and students were given the opportunity to choose jackets in various styles and colors.

“This is obviously a big help for the kids as the weather gets cold and we head into the winter season,” said Simon Chandler, El Paso ISD Community Schools Coordinator. “It feels great to take part in this event. We know there’s a lot of need in the community, including clothing, so to be able to give kids a jacket is important and helpful.”

For the Underserved Communities Foundation, the initiative represents more than just distributing jackets—it’s about creating a sense of warmth and care for local children. “We are so excited about this initiative. This is the first time that we have this jacket event for the kids, and we’re thrilled El Paso ISD is our first partner,” said Diana Hastings, Executive Director of the Underserved Communities Foundation. “It’s very rewarding for us to provide for children who may have difficulties for various reasons, and we’re here to help fill the gap.”

The collaboration highlights the community’s spirit of generosity and care. Jennifer Alarcon, a board member of the foundation, expressed the group’s dedication to supporting children. “We reached out to the community and worked with local partners to get some really cool jackets for the kiddos,” Alarcon said. “I love my community. I love giving back, and I think it’s important for us to do these things.”

Stephanie Cortez, a Parent Engagement Liaison at Magoffin Middle School, echoed this sentiment, reflecting on her own experiences. “It feels good to give back because I grew up in a limited income household, so I also try to give back when I can,” Cortez said.

The success of this initiative has inspired hopes for future campaigns. “I want to say thank you to El Paso ISD for welcoming us and to our donors and partners who supported this campaign,” Hastings added. “Next year, we hope to raise even more jackets.”

Through their combined efforts, El Paso ISD and its community partners are making a tangible difference in students’ lives, one warm jacket at a time.
