Held at Bassett Place on Monday, December 16, the event provided an extraordinary experience for deaf children, allowing them to share their Christmas wishes with a Santa Claus fluent in sign language.

Signing Santa eventFor El Paso ISD students, the event was particularly meaningful, as it celebrated inclusivity and the importance of representation. Children had the chance to interact with Santa in their own language, bridging communication gaps and creating lasting memories.

“This event is so special because it makes the children feel seen and understood,” said Ernest Esquivel, Paraprofessional for Deaf Education. “Having a Santa who can sign shows them that their language is valued and that they can fully participate in the magic of the holiday season.”

Adding an extra layer of sentiment to the event, the person playing Santa Claus was a former El Paso ISD student. His presence served as a source of inspiration and pride for the community, highlighting the achievements of individuals who have thrived within the district’s programs for the deaf.
