Irvin High School Alum

(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – January 7, 2025) — Candice Puente, a proud graduate of Irvin High School and a decorated member of the United States Marine Corps, has been selected for a deeply prestigious role in her 19-year military career. On Tuesday, January 7, Puente, along with three fellow Marines, will stand guard alongside the casket of former President Jimmy Carter as his body is transported to Washington, D.C., for memorial services.

Irvin High School AlumThis solemn duty reflects Puente's dedication and excellence throughout nearly two decades of service in the Marine Corps. Serving as a ceremonial guard for a former president is one of the highest honors bestowed upon military personnel, and it underscores the trust and respect she has earned within her ranks.

President Jimmy Carter, who passed away recently, served as the 39th President of the United States and was widely respected for his lifelong dedication to public service, diplomacy, and humanitarian efforts. During his presidency, Carter established the Department of Education, a move that expanded access to quality education and supported individuals like Puente. The Department of Education has positively impacted the lives of countless Americans by fostering equitable access to learning resources and improving educational standards across the nation.
