(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – January 14, 2025) — Captain Gabriel Navarrete Middle School, one of El Paso ISD’s newest campuses, is making waves in the education world by blending cutting-edge facilities with programs designed to shape well-rounded, future-ready students.

Opened in 2022 as part of the district’s 2016 bond project, Navarrete Middle School stands as a beacon of modern education. Situated on Fort Bliss property near the former William Beaumont Army Medical Center, the school boasts state-of-the-art classrooms, a fine arts wing, a library, and a gym—all designed to enhance student learning and engagement.

“We are proud to offer our students an environment that combines modern resources with programs that instill lifelong values,” said Principal Nuri Robles. “At Navarrete Middle School, we are not just preparing students academically—we are nurturing future leaders with strong character, discipline, and respect.”

Innovative Programs: Kick Start and Beyond

Among the standout initiatives at Navarrete Middle School is the Kick Start program, developed in partnership with martial arts legend Chuck Norris. While martial arts form the foundation of the program, students gain much more than physical skills.

“Being in karate has improved my self-confidence. I used to be quiet and listened to what people had to say. Now I believe in myself and focus on my own success,” said Reagan Conner, an 8th grade student at Navarrete Middle School.

Kick Start programAs part of the program, students also learn discipline, respect, and teamwork—qualities that extend into every aspect of their lives. “Our Kick Start program is about more than martial arts,” Robles explained. “It’s about teaching students the skills they need to navigate challenges, build resilience, and contribute positively to their communities.”

In addition to Kick Start, Navarrete Middle School offers robust academic programs tailored to its diverse student body, including support for military-connected families, emergent bilingual learners, and Honors courses. The campus is also continuing to build on the success of its fine arts programs. This year the school added a guitar club with the hopes of creating a mariachi club next year.

These initiatives reflect the school’s commitment to meeting the unique needs of every student and fostering a culture of inclusivity and achievement.
