(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – January 30, 2025) — Get ready to journey beyond the stars. The Gene Roddenberry Planetarium is inviting the El Paso community to discover the mysteries of our universe through engaging and educational shows.

With events open to the public once a month, the planetarium offers a unique opportunity to learn about the wonders of our solar system and what lies beyond. The next public show is scheduled for Saturday, February 15, 2025, with three separate showtimes to accommodate eager stargazers.

Planetarium"For the first time we are having monthly public shows at the Roddenberry. We are thrilled to broaden our reach and create more opportunities for the community to engage with and enjoy the planetarium,” said Denisse Martinez, Planetarium Program Facilitator. “We have an exciting lineup of shows this year and we can't wait to share the wonders of the cosmos."

A Legacy of Innovation and Inspiration

The Roddenberry Planetarium has been an El Paso treasure since its opening in 1969. Originally constructed as a joint venture between the El Paso Public Schools (now EPISD), the National Science Foundation, and the Woman's League of El Paso, the planetarium has welcomed more than 2 million visitors. Its mission is to educate students and the community about the universe, blending science and wonder in an immersive environment.

Gene RoddenberryNamed in honor of Gene Roddenberry, the El Paso-born creator of the Star Trek universe, the planetarium was officially dedicated in 2001. Roddenberry, a WWII flying ace and acclaimed writer and producer, envisioned a future of exploration and innovation—a vision that aligns perfectly with the planetarium’s mission.

In 2009, the Roddenberry Planetarium transitioned into the digital age with the installation of a state-of-the-art DigiStar projector system. This upgrade allowed for a fully immersive, 360-degree viewing experience, transporting visitors into the depths of space like never before.

In 2021, the planetarium underwent further upgrades through a partnership with the City of El Paso. The renovated facility, located on the grounds of the former Crosby Elementary School at 5411 Wren in Northeast El Paso, now boasts improved acoustics, modern lighting, comfortable seating, and enhanced sound systems.
