(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – February 11, 2025) – The spirit of mariachi is alive and thriving in El Paso ISD as Austin, Chapin, Coronado, and Franklin high schools earned Superior ratings at the UIL Region Mariachi Competition, securing their spots at the UIL State Mariachi Festival in Seguin, Texas, on Feb. 21-22.

These talented student musicians demonstrated remarkable skill and dedication, earning top honors for their performances. Their success at UIL showcases the district’s commitment to preserving and elevating the mariachi tradition in El Paso.

In addition to the state-bound groups, Jefferson Silva and Bowie High Schools made notable strides in their mariachi programs. Jefferson Silva’s newly formed mariachi made its UIL debut, while Bowie’s mariachi returned to the competition after a hiatus—both earning Excellent ratings in their respective categories.

“El Paso ISD’s mariachi programs continue to grow and flourish, and we couldn’t be prouder of our students and directors,” said Phillip Barraza, El Paso ISD Fine Arts Director. “These groups represent the rich cultural heritage of our community while also demonstrating musical excellence. Advancing to state is a major accomplishment, and we’re excited to see our talented students perform on a bigger stage.”

The UIL State Mariachi Festival is a prestigious event that brings together the best high school mariachi ensembles from across Texas, offering students an opportunity to showcase their artistry and passion for this traditional music genre.
