(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – February 14, 2025) – Returning to the place where his dreams burgeoned, newly elected El Paso Mayor Renard Johnson stepped onto the Andress High School campus as a shining example of how public education can empower young minds to grow into future leaders. Johnson’s visit during a highly anticipated basketball matchup between El Paso High School and Andress High School was more than just a homecoming; it was a powerful message to students about perseverance, a sense of duty to one’s community, hope, and the importance of education.
Before tip-off, Johnson addressed both teams, sharing words of encouragement and wisdom drawn from his own experiences as a student in El Paso ISD.
"It feels really good to be back here at Andress," Johnson said. "I have a lot of memories here. This is where I came to school every day, and this is where my friends were made."
During his visit, Johnson, a proud product of El Paso ISD, emphasized the critical role that public schools played in shaping his future.
"I want students to know that regardless of where you go to school, if you set your sights on something, you can do it," he said. "I went to Andress, I wanted to go into business, and I became a successful businessperson. Then, I wanted to run for mayor—and now, I’m here. I want all students to know that whatever they set their minds to, they can get it done."
El Paso ISD’s core belief is that all students have the potential to achieve greatness, and Mayor Johnson’s journey serves as an example of the district’s mission to prepare students for success beyond the classroom. His message reinforced the value of hard work, education, and dedication—principles that align with the district’s vision of empowering students to excel in all their pursuits.
Beyond athletics, Johnson reminded students of the importance of academics, urging them to prioritize their education as the foundation for their futures.
"I want players to know that the hard work and dedication they put in to get to this point is worth it," he said. "But I also want them to understand that getting good grades is just as important. School is the equalizer for everything. Not everyone will make it to the NBA, but education is something you can always fall back on. That’s why working hard in school is the most important thing."
Andress High School Principal Ruben Alarcon echoed the significance of Johnson’s visit and the inspiration it brought to students.
"It’s always an honor to welcome an alumnus back to Andress, especially someone who continues to inspire our Eagles," Alarcon said. "Mayor Johnson’s journey is a testament to what our students can achieve with persistence, dedication, and belief in their potential."
During halftime, El Paso ISD Board President Israel Irrobali, also an Andress alumnus, formally welcomed Mayor Johnson and recognized his accomplishments.
"It’s a proud moment for Andress High School when we witness one of our own leading our city. We are thrilled to see Mayor Johnson's dedication and leadership, showcasing the values instilled in our students,” Irrobali said. “I look forward to collaborating with him to further strengthen public education in El Paso, ensuring a brighter future for our community. "
The Andress Eagles capped off the night with a 58-43 victory over El Paso High, but the evening’s biggest takeaway was Johnson’s inspiring message—one that reinforced the power of education and the boundless opportunities available to students who commit to their dreams.
"This was home for me for many years," Johnson said. "El Paso and Andress have made me who I am today. I never would have become the mayor of this great city if it wasn’t for the foundation I got from the El Paso Independent School District."
