(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – February 25, 2025) – El Paso ISD students are making their mark in the world of business and leadership as they prepare to compete at the state-level DECA competition in March. After an impressive showing at the regional event in January, students from Franklin, Coronado, and CCTE (Center for Career and Technology Education) have qualified to represent their schools at the 2025 Texas DECA State Career Development Conference.
The competition, held at the Starlight Event Center, saw students showcasing their skills in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Franklin High School had approximately 50 students compete, with several advancing to the next round.
For Franklin senior Ali Lopez, this marks her third consecutive year qualifying for the state competition, and she is eager to take her experience to new heights.
“One thing that makes DECA so remarkable is that there is something for everyone,” Lopez said. “Every year, I learn more about myself, and DECA is teaching me lifelong skills that I will use for the rest of my life.”
Lopez hopes to advance beyond the state level and compete at the DECA International Career Development Conference, which will be held in Orlando, Florida, later this year.
Her passion for leadership extends beyond DECA. Lopez, who plans to become an elementary school teacher, aspires to earn a master’s degree with the dream of working at the administrative level.
“There have been so many teachers in my life who made me who I am, and I want to be that for the next generation of students,” Lopez said.

Coronado High School’s Chris Min, a junior, will also compete at the state level for the second time. Inspired by his older brother to join DECA, Min says the organization has given him the chance to explore his interest in business and economics.
“I feel like it’s going to be even more exciting to go with my friends and compete,” Min said. “And I’m really looking forward to the international competition.”
Min encourages other students to join DECA clubs at their schools, citing its unique ability to provide networking opportunities and personal growth.
“The club helps you learn about yourself, and it allows you to meet so many people,” he said.
DECA is a premier student organization that prepares high school and college students for careers in business, finance, marketing, hospitality, and management. Competitions challenge students with real-world scenarios that develop leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, setting them up for success in future careers.
As they prepare to compete at the state-level competition in March, El Paso ISD’s DECA students continue to embody the district’s mission of fostering leadership, innovation, and excellence.
