(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – February 20, 2025) — Student-athletes from El Paso ISD showcased their talent and determination on the wrestling mat, bringing home impressive victories at the UIL State Wrestling Championships.
Burges High School made a strong showing in the 5A division, with three individual medalists leading the charge. Jackelyn Sanchez (100 lbs.) fought her way to a 2nd-place finish, while teammates Joy Jackson (126 lbs.) and Gloria Vasquez (138 lbs.) each secured 3rd place in their respective weight classes. The Burges wrestling team finished 5th overall in the 5A State competition, marking a remarkable achievement for the program.
Chapin High School’s Jayden Strauss (120 lbs.) also represented El Paso ISD with pride, finishing in 6th place in the 5A division.
Franklin High School stood out in the 6A division, earning a 4th-place team finish at State. Several Franklin wrestlers brought home individual accolades, with Jubilee Rendon (100 lbs.), Fiona Smith (107 lbs.), and Braulio Estrada (120 lbs.) each securing 2nd-place finishes. Alexander Tapia (113 lbs.) placed 4th, while Naime Michelle Abdallah (114 lbs.) finished in 5th place, capping off a stellar performance for the Franklin squad.
El Paso ISD Director of Athletics David Cervantes praised the student-athletes for their dedication and success at the state level.
“We are incredibly proud of our wrestlers and the hard work they put in throughout the season,” Cervantes said. “Their commitment to excellence and perseverance on the mat reflect the strength of our athletic programs and the spirit of El Paso ISD. These student-athletes have set a high standard for future generations.”
The district commends all competitors, coaches, and families for their support and dedication to the sport. Their achievements on the state stage highlight the growing strength of wrestling in El Paso ISD and serve as an inspiration for future champions.
