(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – February 24, 2025) — El Paso ISD proudly joins the nationwide celebration of National Montessori Education Week by spotlighting its innovative Montessori programs at Green Elementary and Moreno Elementary. These programs create a unique and dynamic learning environment where students cultivate independence, curiosity, and essential skills for lifelong success.
What Is Montessori?
Rooted in the educational philosophy of Italian educator and physician Maria Montessori, this student-centered method was first introduced in 1907. The Montessori approach empowers students to take charge of their learning through hands-on exploration, inspiring creativity and personal growth. It emphasizes independence while nurturing academic excellence in literacy, mathematics, and social development.

“Our Montessori classrooms are designed to build confidence, compassion, and leadership,” said Cecilia Perez, Principal of Moreno Montessori. “This environment is ideal for children who are naturally curious and eager to explore, providing a safe and engaging space to grow.”
How the Program Works
El Paso ISD’s Montessori programs utilize mixed-age classrooms that promote collaboration and peer learning:
Children’s House (Pre-K3, Pre-K4, Kindergarten)
Lower Elementary (Grades 1-3)
Upper Elementary (Grades 4-5)
In this structure, older students develop leadership skills by mentoring younger peers, while younger students benefit from the guidance and example of their older classmates.
Benefits of Montessori Learning
Montessori students in El Paso ISD develop skills that extend far beyond academics, including:
Building independence, perseverance, and self-regulation
Strengthening literacy and mathematical proficiency
Enhancing creativity through hands-on exploration
Developing respect, responsibility, and effective communication
“I appreciate the life skills Montessori teaches my daughter,” said Dominique Vasquez, a parent of a Montessori student. “It provides her with independence and essential academic foundations that will benefit her throughout life.”
