(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – April 4, 2025) — El Paso ISD students are stepping up to serve their community by offering free tax preparation assistance through the GECU Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The program, which runs through mid-April, gives students hands-on experience while helping community members file their taxes.
For students like Odey Marquez, a junior at Irvin High School, the experience is both educational and fulfilling.
“I saw the opportunity to learn and actually see how all this stuff works, so I took the opportunity to join,” Marquez said. “It also gave me a chance to do good and help others.”
The VITA program allows students to gain real-world financial literacy skills while also earning community service hours. For Luis Alamo, another Irvin High junior, the program has provided more than just technical experience—it has also given him the opportunity to connect with his community.
“I like doing this because it gives me a chance to meet with people,” Alamo said. “Everyone I have met doing this is sweet and kind. It feels good to help people.”
Students involved in the program work under the guidance of instructors like Jesse Alvarez, who has been leading the initiative at Irvin High School. Alvarez believes the program instills a strong sense of responsibility and dedication in his students.
“I’ve always liked giving back to the community. I give because I want to give and help people,” Alvarez said. “I don’t get paid to be here and the student's don't get paid either. We're all here so willing to help others, and it’s a great thing.”
Alvarez emphasized the dedication of his students, many of whom stay late to assist families in need.
“These kids are sometimes here from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and they’re here every Thursday, and they don’t mind,” he said. “That’s dedication. For me, if I were to stop doing this, I feel like I would let down my students because they want to get involved.”
The VITA program is available at multiple El Paso ISD campuses, with student volunteers assisting community members at no cost.
