(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – Sept. 12, 2025) — The El Paso High School community gathered Wednesday evening to honor the life and legacy of beloved coach Danny McKillip with the official dedication of the school’s track in his name.
The ceremony, held at historic El Paso High, celebrated McKillip’s extraordinary impact as a coach, mentor, and role model. Family members, alumni, colleagues, and city leaders joined students and staff to pay tribute to a man whose influence stretched far beyond athletics.
McKillip, who passed away in 2024, spent more than four decades shaping generations of student-athletes. As El Paso High’s track and cross country coach, he guided the Tigers to five state championships and built a reputation for excellence, discipline, and heart. Before his coaching career, McKillip was a standout long-distance runner at UTEP, helping the Miners win the 1969 NCAA cross country title. His achievements earned him a place in the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame and the respect of the entire community.
“When you look at the accomplishments of an athlete, the coach plays a vital role in that success,” said El Paso High alumna Patricia Brunson. “All those championships won under Coach McKillip weren’t by accident. They were the result of hard work and dedication, and those victories are a testament to his commitment to his students.”
McKillip’s dedication to students extended beyond athletics. Former athletes often recall how his encouragement pushed them not only to excel in running, but also to succeed in the classroom and in life. His legacy continues to inspire both current students and alumni.
The dedication also highlighted the broader recognition McKillip received throughout the city. In November 2024, the El Paso Mayor and City Council proclaimed “Coach Danny McKillip Day” in his honor, recognizing his lasting contributions to youth and education.
As the new “Coach Danny McKillip Track” was unveiled, cheers erupted from the crowd, symbolizing the deep gratitude of a community that will forever carry his memory forward.
“El Paso High’s track now bears the name of a champion in every sense of the word,” said Interim Superintendent Martha Aguirre. “This dedication is more than a tribute, it’s a promise that Coach McKillip’s influence will continue to inspire future Tigers for generations to come.”
