(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT — Sept. 23, 2025) — Irvin High School head football coach Jonathan “Jon” Elliot has been named a finalist for the Game-Changing Coach Award presented by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football in partnership with Ballogy. The recognition puts Coach Elliot among an elite group of just 60 coaches spotlighted across Texas for the 2025-26 season.
Elliot, who took the helm of the Irvin Rockets program in 2024 after serving as offensive coordinator at Chapin High School, is known for his drive to develop student-athletes both on and off the field. Under his leadership, players have been challenged not only to perform in competition, but also to excel in the classroom and embrace the values of discipline, teamwork, and character.
“This recognition isn’t just about wins or losses—it’s about the way Coach Elliot inspires our Rockets to rise to their full potential,” said Irvin and Transmountain Early College High School Principal Robert Stives. “He has created a culture where our students know they belong, they’re supported, and they’re capable of greatness.”
The Game-Changing Coach Award is part of a statewide contest that allows fans and communities to vote for their nominee. Voting opened Sept. 5 and will continue through Oct. 22 at TexasFootball.com. The winning coach will be honored as the Game-Changing Coach of the Year.
For Elliot, the recognition is particularly meaningful because it comes from Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, the magazine often referred to as “The Bible of Texas Football.” First published in 1960, the magazine has become a staple across the state, covering more than 1,500 high schools, 47 colleges, and Texas’ two NFL franchises. Its reach spans more than 400,000 readers each year, making it one of the most influential voices in football.
El Paso ISD is encouraging the community to rally behind Elliot by casting their votes. His recognition not only highlights his leadership, but also shines a light on the work being done in El Paso ISD athletics to build programs that support students’ futures on the field, in the classroom, and in life.
