(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT — Jan. 26, 2026) — El Paso ISD students showcased their language skills and academic excellence during the district’s annual Spanish Spelling Bee, held Thursday, January 22, at Austin High School.
This year’s competition resulted in a rare and impressive outcome, with Emiliano Ferrán Martinez Caloca of Wiggs Middle School and Shaheli De Silva of Young Women’s Academy tying for first place. This marked the third consecutive year the two students have shared the top honor.
Luna Millian of Navarrete Middle School earned second place, demonstrating strong spelling skills in a highly competitive field.

The Spanish Spelling Bee celebrates bilingualism, literacy, and academic achievement, bringing together students from across the district to compete in a challenging and fast-paced event conducted entirely in Spanish.
The top finishers will now advance to the Regional Spanish Spelling Bee, scheduled for Saturday, February 7, at the Starlight Event Center, where they will represent El Paso ISD against students from across the region.
