(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT — Feb. 6, 2026) — At Bobby Joe Hill PK–8 STEAM Academy, student success is measured by more than test scores, but by the development of well-rounded learners who excel academically, lead with character, and thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

As a STEAM Academy, the campus emphasizes science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics as interconnected disciplines that promote critical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world application. Research consistently shows that students engaged in STEAM-based learning demonstrate stronger academic performance, improved attendance, and increased readiness for college and careers, outcomes that campus leaders see reflected daily.

One student who exemplifies that impact is Giovanni Soto, a seventh-grade student who represents excellence across academics, athletics, behavior, and leadership.

Giovanni maintains A's in all subject areas, including advanced coursework, reflecting both strong content knowledge and a disciplined approach to learning. His exceptional attendance record highlights a consistent commitment to school and personal responsibility.

“At Bobby Joe Hill, we believe STEAM education is about preparing students for life—not just the next test,” said Shari Jones, principal of Bobby Joe Hill PK–8. “Giovanni embodies that vision. He challenges himself academically, leads with integrity, and shows what’s possible when students are supported in all areas of growth.”

STEAM-focused campuses like Bobby Joe Hill intentionally integrate hands-on learning, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. These are skills that research shows are increasingly valued in postsecondary education and the workforce.

With the rapid evolution of technology and engineering, STEAM-focused education has never been more crucial to the future. According to the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics’ 2024, Talent: U.S. and Global STEM Education and Labor Force report, the nation’s STEM workforce has steadily expanded for over three decades, growing several times faster than overall employment since 1990 and continuing to rise at about 2% annually through 2024.

“STEM/STEAM education in our middle and high schools fosters innovation and critical thinking, preparing students for in-demand, and high-wage careers,” said Enrique Gomez, Coordinator Career Programs with Career and Technical Education. “Students develop these work-based learning skills as they collaborate with peers and industry partners throughout the district.”
