Stars, Stripes, and Spokes

(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – May 11, 2026) — The sound of spinning bike tires and cheering families filled the air Saturday morning as students from across El Paso ISD gathered at Nolan Richardson Middle School for the district’s “Stars, Stripes, and Spokes” bike race and community wellness fair.

What began as part of El Paso ISD’s Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) “Raise the Bar” initiative transformed into a celebration of fitness, teamwork, and resilience, bringing together students, staff, military-connected families, and community partners for a day centered on healthy living and school spirit.

Stars, Stripes, and SpokesCampuses participating in the event included Canyon Hills Middle School, Hartley PK-8, Navarrete Middle School, Nolan Richardson Middle School, Young Women’s STEAM Research & Preparatory Academy, and Wiggs Middle School.

Throughout the morning, students raced through courses designed to test endurance, confidence, and determination while families enjoyed food trucks, local vendors, and community activities. The event also featured adult racing categories, awards, and a bike raffle that added to the excitement.

For Wiggs Middle School science teacher Matthew Moriel, the event represented much more than a competition.

“I am taking part in the Stars, Stripes & Spokes event to help students build confidence, teamwork, and perseverance through mountain biking,” Moriel said. “It’s a great opportunity for students to challenge themselves in a positive and healthy environment while having fun and representing their school.”

Moriel said students spent weeks preparing for the event, improving their riding skills, endurance, safety awareness, and teamwork both on campus and during trail rides throughout the community.

“I hope students gain confidence, responsibility, sportsmanship, and a sense of accomplishment,” he said. “Events like these help students realize they are capable of achieving great things when they stay committed and work together.”

The event also highlighted the district’s continued commitment to student wellness and engagement beyond the classroom.

“I’m taking part in this event to promote physical activity in a fun and engaging way for students,” said Jorge Martinez, El Paso ISD Raise the Bar instructor. “It’s a great opportunity to encourage a healthy lifestyle while building excitement around fitness outside the classroom.”

Martinez emphasized that the event was designed to create an environment where every student felt included, regardless of experience level.

Stars, Stripes, and Spokes“This event is about more than just racing,” Martinez said. “It’s about creating a supportive environment where all students feel included and capable. Whether students are experienced riders or trying it for the first time, the goal is for everyone to leave feeling proud of their effort and excited to stay active.”

Organizers say events like “Stars, Stripes, and Spokes” continue to strengthen school connections while encouraging students to develop healthy habits, leadership skills, and confidence that extend far beyond the finish line.
