(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – May 29, 2026) — The championship matches of the inaugural El Paso ISD Copa de District presented by Southwest University will take place this Saturday, May 30, 8:30 a.m., at Bowie High School, bringing together the district’s top student soccer teams for a day of exciting competition inspired by the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With the World Cup arriving on home soil this summer, El Paso ISD has once again taken the lead as a regional pioneer by launching the first-ever Copa de District, creating a unique opportunity for students to celebrate the world's game while representing their schools and communities.
Championship action begins at 8:30 a.m. and will feature finalists from elementary, middle, and high school divisions. Bobby Joe Hill PK-8, Barron, Aoy, and Tom Lea elementary schools have advanced to the championship round. The Middle School Girls final will feature Brown and Guillen Middle Schools, while Hornedo and Magoffin will compete for the Middle School Boys title. Burges and Bowie High Schools advanced to the championship match in both the Boys and Girls High School divisions.
The tournament kicked off on May 23 and drew hundreds of student-athletes, families, and community members from across El Paso ISD.
“Copa de District is more than just a tournament; it’s a reflection of El Paso ISD’s commitment to bringing enriching experiences to our students and celebrating their immense talent,” said David Cervantes, Executive Director of Athletics. “By bridging the gap between the classroom and the pitch, we are teaching our students that the skills required for success are universal.”
El Paso ISD views athletics as a vital extension of the educational experience. The Copa de District is designed to foster school pride, belonging, teamwork, and healthy competition while promoting physical and mental well-being. By involving students from elementary through high school, the district is creating a pipeline for athletic development and leadership.
El Paso ISD invites families, alumni, soccer fans, and media outlets from across the Borderland to attend Saturday’s championship matches and celebrate the students competing for district bragging rights.
