(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – June 1, 2026) — History was made Saturday as El Paso ISD crowned the first-ever Copa de District champions, bringing together students, families, and communities from across the district for a celebration of soccer, school pride, and World Cup excitement.
The championship matches were held at Bowie High School, where teams from elementary, middle, and high school campuses competed for district bragging rights after advancing through earlier rounds of tournament play.
When the final whistle blew, five campuses earned the distinction of becoming the inaugural Copa de District champions:
Elementary Division Champion: Tom Lea Elementary School
Middle School Girls Champion: Brown Middle School
Middle School Boys Champion: Magoffin Middle School
High School Girls Champion: Bowie High School
High School Boys Champion: Burges High School
The tournament was launched to celebrate the growing excitement surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup while providing students with an opportunity to showcase teamwork, sportsmanship, and athletic talent.
Throughout the tournament, hundreds of student-athletes represented their campuses with pride as families and community members packed the sidelines to cheer them on. The event featured competition across multiple grade levels, creating a unique districtwide experience that united students through a shared love of soccer.
“This tournament was about much more than winning matches,” said David Cervantes, Executive Director of Athletics. “It was an opportunity to bring our school communities together, celebrate our students, and create lasting memories during a historic year for soccer in our region. The energy and enthusiasm we saw throughout the tournament was incredible.”
The inaugural Copa de District highlighted El Paso ISD's commitment to providing students with meaningful extracurricular opportunities that support leadership, teamwork, perseverance, and school connectedness.
District leaders praised all participating teams, coaches, families, and volunteers who helped make the tournament a success.
As the world turns its attention to soccer this summer, El Paso ISD's first-ever Copa de District has already established a new tradition that celebrates both athletic excellence and community pride.
