(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – Oct. 2, 2026) — Three El Paso ISD choirs are competing for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: the chance to take the stage with legendary rock band Foreigner when the group comes to El Paso this month.
Captain Gabriel Navarrete Middle School, Magoffin Middle School and Irvin High School are among the finalists in a 93.1 KISS FM choir contest that invited school choirs from across the El Paso region to submit performances for a chance to sing alongside Foreigner.
The winning choir will perform “I Want to Know What Love Is” live with the band and receive a $500 donation to support its students and music program.
“Fine Arts gives our students a place to discover their voice, build confidence and develop skills that stay with them far beyond the classroom,” said Phillip Barraza, El Paso ISD Executive Director of Fine Arts. “Opportunities like this allow our students to share their talent with the community, challenge themselves and experience the excitement of performing on a larger stage. We are incredibly proud of our students and the dedication they bring to their craft every day.”
For the three EPISD finalists, the contest is about more than performing on a big stage. It is an opportunity for students to share their talent, build confidence and celebrate the work they have put into their choir programs.
At Navarrete Middle School, the choir has continued to grow while giving students opportunities to develop their musical abilities and find a sense of belonging through music.
Magoffin Middle School's choir is also embracing the opportunity as the program continues to grow and build its identity. Despite changes in leadership in recent years, students have shown a strong desire to perform and represent their school and the Northeast community.
At Irvin High School, the choir may be small, but its students are bringing plenty of determination. The group of eight singers is using the opportunity to reconnect with the community, showcase its talent and continue building the Rockets' choir program.
The finalists' performances are now in the hands of the community.
Voting is open through noon Sunday, Oct. 4, with the winning choir scheduled to be announced Monday, Oct. 5. Community members can watch the finalist performances and cast their vote through 93.1 KISS FM's contest page.
