(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT — May 8, 2025) — Austin High School’s Head Football Coach and Athletic Coordinator, Eric Pichardo, has been named a finalist for the esteemed 2025 Tom Landry Award — a recognition that places him among the top high school football coaches in the state of Texas.
Coach Pichardo is one of only eight coaches in the state to be considered for the honor, which is presented by the Texas High School Coaches Association. The award is named after legendary Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry and is given to high school football coaches who have made significant contributions to the game while serving as outstanding role models for student-athletes and fellow coaches.
“This nomination is an incredible honor — not just for me, but for our entire Austin High School community,” said Coach Pichardo. “It reflects the hard work, character, and determination of our players, coaching staff, and supporters. I’m proud to represent El Paso ISD and our Panther family.”
Pichardo’s journey into coaching began when he was just 16 years old, living across the street from Guillen Middle School. A group of eighth graders needed a baseball coach for their team and turned to him for leadership. He credits those early experiences as a baseball coach — and the students who believed in him — for shaping his coaching philosophy.
“Coaching has always been about more than football for me,” Pichardo said. “I know it sounds cliché, but I really do love making a difference in students’ lives. That’s what drives me.”
Now in his eighth year as head coach at Austin High School — and with a prior eight-year tenure at Bowie High School — Pichardo’s career reflects decades of dedication to the students of El Paso ISD. His influence spans generations. “I’ve coached students who now bring their own kids to play for me,” he said. “To see them grow up and do well in life — that’s the most rewarding part.”
While victories on the field are celebrated, Pichardo says his true focus is preparing his athletes for life beyond the game. “Winning championships is great,” he said, “but life isn’t just about that. It’s about helping students walk the right path and be ready for the real world.”
El Paso ISD proudly congratulates Coach Eric Pichardo on this well-deserved recognition.
