Austin and El Paso high football players reach for the football

Friday night football is back, and with it comes one of the most storied rivalries in El Paso's rich athletic history. On August 31, the Austin High School Panthers clashed with the El Paso High School Tigers in the 94th edition of the Battle of the Claw, a game that holds a special place in the hearts of students, alumni, and the community. Set against the backdrop of the historic R.R. Jones Stadium, the game kicked off at 1 p.m., promising an electrifying atmosphere as the Panthers and Tigers vied for dominance. The Battle of the Claw delivered a thrilling showdown as the Panthers clawed their way to a nail-biting 21-19 victory over the Tigers.

This rivalry, which began in 1930, is more than just a football game—it's a cherished tradition that has been passed down through generations. Since 1960, the two teams have competed for "The Claw," a coveted trophy symbolizing the fierce competition and deep-rooted history between the schools. The idea for the trophy was born from a student council member's desire to bring the excitement of college football rivalries to El Paso, and it has since become a treasured symbol of school pride.

"The Claw" is not just a trophy; it's about upholding a legacy and continuing a tradition that has shaped the identity of both Austin and El Paso High.

For the coaches, players, and fans, this game is the culmination of months of preparation, dedication, and anticipation. “There are only 10 games per season, so each game is special to us,” said Austin High School Football Coach Eric Pichardo. “After the season, we all miss it. As coaches, we miss the nerves leading up to the game. It’s addictive, but it’s a good addiction.” El Paso High School Football Coach Ray Aguilar shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the sense of community that Friday night football brings. “The community coming together—alumni, bands, cheerleaders, families, and friends—all contribute to a great experience at R.R. Jones Stadium,” Aguilar said.

This rivalry between Austin and El Paso High isn't just one of the oldest in the city—it's the fourth-oldest rivalry game in the entire state of Texas. Over the years, this matchup has produced countless memorable moments, from thrilling last-minute victories to displays of sportsmanship. And even though the rivalry dates back to 1930, the game marked one of the few times that the Panthers and Tigers faced off in August, adding another historic moment to this storied tradition.
