(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT — May 22, 2025) — El Paso ISD proudly celebrated the district’s outstanding educators and staff during the 2024-25 Teacher of the Year and Educational Support Personnel of the Year awards ceremony, held Thursday, May 22. The event recognized exceptional service, dedication, and excellence across campuses and departments.
Sandra Iglesias, an inspiring educator at Cielo Vista Elementary School, was named Elementary Teacher of the Year. With a passion for nurturing the whole child, Iglesias transforms her classroom into a warm, imaginative space where her students are empowered to explore learning through hands-on experiences.
Mary Bejarano, a dynamic reading teacher at Hornedo Middle School, was selected as Secondary Teacher of the Year. Known to students as “Miss B,” she is celebrated for her engaging lessons and inclusive classroom environment. Her motto—“Everybody has a VOICE because everybody MATTERS”—captures her belief that every child deserves a champion.
Their innovative teaching practices, commitment to student success, and passion for education earned them top honors.
In the Educational Support Personnel of the Year category, the district recognized Monica Avina, a valued team member at Crockett Elementary School, for her energy, leadership, and school spirit. Alejandra Hernandez from Polk Elementary School was also named an honoree for her warmth, professionalism, and strong relationships with staff, families, and the community.
These dedicated individuals were celebrated for going above and beyond to create supportive, welcoming environments that help students and staff thrive.
“This group represents the heart of El Paso ISD,” said Superintendent Diana Sayavedra. “Whether they’re in the classroom or behind the scenes, their commitment to excellence makes a profound impact on our students’ lives. We are proud to honor their work and the work of every finalist who helps shape the future of our district.”
This year’s celebration also introduced three new districtwide honors in partnership with Raiz Federal Credit Union: the Inspire, Empower, and Thrive Awards, recognizing excellence in leadership, community engagement, and service.
The Inspire Award was presented to Tony Martinez, Campus Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach at Jefferson High School, for his exceptional mentorship and role modeling for student-athletes.
The Empower Award went to Simon Chandler, Assistant Director of Equity and Community Engagement, for his advocacy and leadership in advancing inclusive practices across the district.
The Thrive Award was awarded to Claudia Cardoza, a custodian whose commitment and care create a safe, welcoming environment to the El Paso ISD community each day.
The evening was filled with joy and appreciation, made even more memorable thanks to the lively and heartfelt hosting by KVIA-TV Good Morning El Paso anchor Hillary Floren and Daniel Veale, Marketing Director at El Paso Children’s Hospital. Their warm presence helped make the event a fun and meaningful celebration for all in attendance.
