(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – April 29, 2025) — Students from across El Paso ISD are gearing up to showcase their skills, teamwork, and determination during the annual Raise the Bar Games, taking place Saturday, May 3, at Chapin High School. The event runs from 8 a.m. to noon and is open to parents, students, and community members.
The Raise the Bar Games unites students from all 15 Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) 2021 campuses for a day of spirited competition and celebration. The event highlights El Paso ISD’s commitment to the holistic development of military-connected students through fun, active, and engaging activities.
The games are a signature initiative of El Paso ISD’s DoDEA grant program, which funds programs that promote academic achievement, social-emotional growth, and community engagement for students whose families serve in the armed forces. These initiatives ensure students have access to high-quality, vertically aligned academic and enrichment programs, wherever their military journey takes them.
For many students, Raise the Bar is more than just a competition—it’s an opportunity to build character and community.
“Students have gained self-confidence after participating in Raise the Bar,” said Robert Ramirez, Elementary Physical Education teacher at Bliss Elementary. “When we first started coaching, the kids were a little intimidated. But once they learned the skills and rules, they became confident and excited to compete.”
Ramirez emphasized that Raise the Bar extends far beyond physical fitness—it helps students develop essential social-emotional skills.
“Raise the Bar goes beyond physical fitness in regard to social and emotional learning,” he said. “The kids are showing respect to others, team building, and learning how to make responsible decisions both inside and outside the classroom.”
The event also reinforces important life lessons about sportsmanship and resilience. “Raise the Bar helps build character,” Ramirez added. “We’ve shown our kids that there’s a way to win and a way to lose—with respect. If they lose, they should hold their heads high, and if they win, they should congratulate their opponents with grace.”
Organizers see the event as a meaningful opportunity for the community to view students in a new light.
“It’s important for the community and families to see students outside the classroom environment,” Ramirez said. “At the end of the day, they’re kids—and it’s powerful to see them dedicate themselves to something that builds skills, confidence, and pride."
He also thanked the parents for their trust and partnership: “I want to thank the parents for trusting us with their kids and giving us the opportunity to help them succeed—not just in games, but in life.”
El Paso ISD invites all families and community members to come out and support these exceptional students as they raise the bar for excellence—on and off the field.
