(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – December 12, 2024) — Holiday cheer filled the cafeteria of Moye Elementary School Thursday morning as students from Franklin and Coronado High Schools teamed up for their annual Holiday Blessings event. From 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., elementary students were gifted boxes brimming with clothing, toys, and even bikes—a heartwarming tradition that embodies the spirit of giving and community.
The Holiday Blessings initiative, a partnership between the two high schools, allows students to “adopt” children and provide them with essentials and presents, ensuring a brighter holiday season for those in need. This effort reflects El Paso ISD’s commitment to community engagement and collaboration, key components of its Strategic Blueprint. By fostering partnerships and prioritizing whole-child development, the district continues to build a stronger, more connected community.
“Seeing their reactions is amazing,” said Victoria Galindo, a senior at Coronado High School. “Watching their faces light up is something that really changes you as a person, and you just want to keep doing it every year.”
Galindo, who has participated in the event since her freshman year, reflected on the impact the program has had on her and the community. “Even though Franklin High School is our rival, during the holidays we always come together, and moments like this show everyone just how much of a community we are,” she said.
The event also serves as an opportunity for high school students to foster leadership skills and a sense of responsibility. “It’s a very stressful job. I mean, some people forget to bring their gifts, so we really have to stay on top of things,” Galindo said. “However, you kind of leave a legacy doing this, and teaching others to give back is really nice.”
Franklin High School senior Ali Lopez shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the joy of giving back. “This is my favorite event of the year because it reminds us that even small actions can make a big difference,” Lopez said. “Seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces makes all the hard work worth it.”
Moye Elementary Assistant Principal Melissa Holt expressed gratitude for the high schoolers’ efforts, highlighting the positive impact on the younger students. “This event means so much to our kids,” Holt said. “It’s not just about the gifts; it’s about showing them that their community cares for them and believes in their future.”
The Holiday Blessings event also exemplifies El Paso ISD’s focus on Leadership and Talent Development, as students take charge of organizing and executing the initiative. These experiences help build their confidence and skills, preparing them for future success.
For Galindo, the event’s significance extends beyond the holiday season. “I’m a senior, and I’m really sad that this is going to be my last event,” she said. “I know there are different ways you can give back and make a difference in someone’s life, and I plan to keep doing that.”
As the morning wrapped up and the cafeteria buzzed with excitement and gratitude, it was clear that the Holiday Blessings event is more than just a tradition—it’s a testament to the power of kindness, collaboration, and community. By working together, the Franklin and Coronado students demonstrated the values of service, leadership, and unity that are at the core of El Paso ISD’s mission.
