(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT — Oct. 9, 2025) — Middle school students from across El Paso ISD came together Wednesday for an unforgettable day of energy, teamwork, and celebration during Raise the Bar: Stars, Stripes & Spokes, a high-spirited bike race held at Nolan Richardson Middle School.
The event marked the final year of the district’s Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Raise the Bar grant, a multi-year initiative aimed at enriching the educational experience of military-connected students. Nearly 30 students from Hartley, MacArthur, Navarrete, and Richardson middle schools competed in a challenging obstacle-style bike race designed to test both physical endurance and mental grit, while building confidence, camaraderie, and community spirit.

“Raise the Bar is an initiative that promotes health and wellness for our students, and we want to remind our kids to stay active throughout their lives even after they’re done with their schooling,” said Nivia Bernal, Project Manager for DoDEA grant. “I am excited to see so many people show up for this event even though most of our kids are now out on break. Them being here just shows their commitment and dedication.”
In partnership with the EPISD Employee Benefits Department, the event emphasized wellness and teamwork, blending physical fitness with fun. Sponsors including La Wheela, Mountain Star Adventures, Rad Dog Bikes, Trek El Paso and Taft-Diaz Masonic Lodge #1297 contributed services, giveaways and prizes, including a brand-new bicycle awarded to the top finisher — a gesture that underscored the event’s commitment to student health and well-being.
The winner, a student whose family is currently stationed at Fort Bliss through the U.S. Army’s Sergeant Major Academy, said the prize will make it easier to get to school each day. The moment captured the true spirit of Raise the Bar by empowering students to overcome challenges through perseverance and community support.
EPISD is proud to serve military and allied families from around the world, including those temporarily residing in El Paso through international partnerships. The district’s DoDEA-funded programs foster consistency and connection for students who often relocate due to military service, ensuring that every child feels supported and inspired to thrive.
