Dear El Paso ISD,
We hope your school year is off to a great start! We’re beginning this year with outstanding news that reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire community. El Paso ISD has earned an overall “B” rating from the Texas Education Agency! Even more exciting, 15 campuses earned an “A” rating, that’s compared to 4 last year. In addition, 24 campuses earned a “B” rating that’s compared to 22 from the previous year.
Our schools also collectively received 122 Distinction Designations with four campuses earning every available distinction. These schools include Charles Middle School, Hawkins Elementary School, Milam Elementary School, and Young Women’s STEAM Academy. The awards celebrate exceptional performance in areas such as Math, Science, Social Studies, Academic Growth, and Closing the Gaps. This achievement is proof that our commitment to student success is paying off in measurable, inspiring ways. You can read more about the Accountability Rating results by clicking here.
As we celebrate this achievement, we are reminded of our students’ successes. These future leaders continue to inspire us with their drive and accomplishments. Over the summer, Young Women’s STEAM Academy senior Catherine Cardenas was one of just 95 students nationwide selected from more than 3,000 applicants for a prestigious NASA internship. Working alongside NASA scientists, she researched the Urban Heat Island effect, developing skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and data analysis. Catherine’s journey is a reminder that with passion and persistence, no dream is out of reach.
Our faculty are equally inspiring. John Gable, welding instructor at Delta Academy, was recently honored by the El Paso County Juvenile Probation Department for achieving a 100% certification rate among his welding students in the Challenge Program. His dedication not only equips students with valuable industry credentials but also provides them with the confidence and opportunity to build a better future.
Speaking of incredible educators, we are cheering on Sandra Iglesias of Cielo Vista Elementary and Mary Bejarano of Hornedo Middle School as they compete this weekend for Region 19 Teacher of the Year honors. Both have already been recognized as El Paso ISD’s top teachers for 2024–25 and will proudly represent our district at the Starlight Event Center on Saturday. Their creativity, commitment, and love for teaching embody the very best of our profession.
As we celebrate these successes, let’s leverage this momentum forward into a year full of learning, growth, and achievement. Here’s to a wonderful and successful school year ahead!
It starts with us.
Sincerely,
Martha Aguirre
Interim Superintendent of Schools
