(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – July 9, 2024) — Austin High School's Student Council has been honored with the prestigious 2024 National Gold Council of Excellence award by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC), in recognition of its outstanding leadership, service, and contributions that enhance both the school and the community.

“This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication we've invested in this program,” said Mariluisa Chavez, former Vice President of the Austin High School Student Council. “It's more than just an award; it reflects our continuous effort from the start of the school year to now. We hope it inspires our future team to strive for excellence.”

Notable events organized by the Student Council include the Sandra Day O'Connor Memorial held on December 8, 2023, and more recently, the District 3 Candidate Forum on April 2, 2024. Collaborating closely with feeder pattern schools, community organizations, and Fort Bliss, Austin High StuCo continues to dedicate itself to the improvement of both the school and the broader Austin community.

“I want to make sure that not just our community, not just our campus, but that everybody knows we’re putting Austin on the map,” said Student Activities Manager Vanessa Amos. “We want people to know that Austin is here to not only serve our community but to also show that we have some great kids here and they’re doing great things. I’m already looking forward to continuing our mission next semester.”

Throughout the post-pandemic recovery period, the Austin High StuCo has played a pivotal role in revitalizing school spirit and community engagement. Their efforts have included organizing rallies, hosting activities, and fostering friendly competitions like Bingo and Austin Trivia among faculty and students, aimed at boosting morale.

To qualify for the National Gold Council of Excellence Award, student councils must meet rigorous criteria, including maintaining a written constitution, holding regular meetings, conducting democratic elections, and demonstrating significant achievements in leadership development and community service.
