P-TECH PROGRAM AT JEFFERSON/SILVA HIGH SCHOOL: A PATHWAY TO SUCCESS
(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – July 24, 2024) — The P-Tech program at Jefferson/Silva High School is paving the way for students to achieve academic and career success. This innovative program allows students to earn college credits, certifications, and potentially an associate degree by the time they graduate high school.
Abbie Rodriguez, CCMR Advisor, shared insights about the program during the Summer Bridge event held in late June, “We're welcoming students from 8th grade who have been admitted to our P-Tech program, which focuses on medical training," Rodriguez said. "Students can earn their EMT certification or an associate degree by their senior year."
Gibran Santibanez, a current student, reflected on his journey in the P-Tech program. "I joined the program a year ago, and it was overwhelming at first, but I've adapted," he said. "The program offers great opportunities, like earning college credits and reducing the time needed for a degree."
Rodriguez emphasized the program's accessibility saying, "P-Tech programs are available at every school in the district, offering various career paths, including medical, education, and business. This allows any student to gain college credits and certifications while in high school."
The program includes dual credit courses, internships, and hands-on training. "Our goal is to expose students to job opportunities and possibly internships early on," Rodriguez explained. "This is our first graduating class, so we're learning and growing alongside our students."
Gibran said he appreciates the flexibility the program provides. "I'm working towards my EMT certification and considering a career in psychology. The program's structure allows me to focus on my interests," he added. "Although it's a lot of work, it's worth it because of the opportunities and support from counselors."
The excitement is building as parents and students recognize the program's potential. "Parents show the most interest initially, which then trickles down to the students," Rodriguez noted. "Our ambassadors, who are students themselves, help spread enthusiasm by sharing their experiences."
Being part of the first graduating class, Gibran said he sees the program's value. "Overall, the courses have been very good. It’s definitely worth the effort," he said.
Rodriguez shared her enthusiasm for the program's future: "We're really excited to have this here on campus. It makes college and career opportunities accessible to students early on, bringing these opportunities to them rather than having to go elsewhere."
The P-Tech program at Jefferson/Silva High School represents a significant step forward in making college and career opportunities accessible to all students, fostering a brighter future for the community.
