(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT โ Jun. 7, 2024) โ A Chapin graduate is continuing her military aspirations post high school. Americas Huerta, who has been a part of the Husky JROTC program for years, was recently appointed to the United States Naval Academy. She explained to El Paso ISD why it has always been her dream to join the program.
How did it feel when you were accepted into the Naval Academy?
I was very excited when I found out that I had been accepted into the program. It has been one of my goals to join the Naval Academy since I was in 8th grade. It has a lot of opportunity tied into it. Plus, I get to explore the world, and getting to serve my country at the same time is something that I think is great.
What programs are you interested in at the Naval Academy?
Iโve always been interested in the fields of engineering and aerospace, but Iโm also interested in other things the Naval Academy can offer me. For instance, Iโve always been interested to go on ships and explore the world and that is one of the reasons why I applied for the program. I canโt deny, it does scare me a bit because I know itโs going to be a shift from my everyday life, but Iโm looking forward to what it has to offer.
How long did the entire process take?
It has been a long process. I began my application since last July and Iโve been working on it throughout my senior year. To get the congressional nomination, I had to write an essay and talk about the person who inspired me on my journey. I also had to get a few letters of recommendation and do a video essay about why you want to join the program. After the long process, I finally get to leave to the academy at the end of June!
What are you looking forward to the most?
Iโm looking forward to learning about this new culture. I know itโs going to be scary, but I think itโll be fun. Iโm also interested in the sports and academic programs.
Do you have any advice to share to the incoming freshman students?
I would say to those who are thinking of following in my footsteps would be to just persevere and keep moving forward. Donโt be discouraged and keep applying. Iโll admit that itโs a lot of work, but at the end of the day, itโs a rewarding decision.
