A new El Paso spelling bee champion has been crowned.
Chioma Egbuonu, an eighth-grade student at St. Raphael Catholic School took home the first-place trophy. El Paso ISD hosted the event Friday, March 22, at Bowie High School. Thirty-six students from across El Paso and Southern New Mexico competed at the event.
Egbuonu will compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee this May. It will take place in National Harbor, Maryland. Bee week will take place from Sunday, May 26, to Friday, May 31. The national competition will begin with the preliminaries on May 28, and conclude with the finals on May 30. Peter Piper Pizza will cover Egbuonu’s expenses for the event.
