(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – October 3, 2024) — El Paso ISD has launched an exciting new initiative to further develop its leadership pipeline through the Empower Fellowship program. A cohort of 19 assistant principals has been selected to take part in this rigorous 8-month program designed to support their growth and prepare them for principalship.
The Empower Fellowship, in partnership with The Holdsworth Center, focuses on equipping assistant principals with the necessary skills and knowledge to take the next step in their leadership journey. As the district strives for a 2:1 leadership ratio—ensuring there are two trained leaders for every principal position—the program plays a key role in meeting this goal by developing a pool of well-prepared candidates ready to take on the challenges of school leadership.
Participants in the Empower Fellowship will engage in a series of assignments, leadership training, and workshops. The program works in close collaboration with campus principals, providing fellows with hands-on experiences to ensure that they are fully prepared for the role of principal. Each assistant principal will work under the guidance of their campus leader to apply their learning in real-world situations, receiving feedback and support to grow in their leadership capabilities.
"The Empower Fellowship is a unique opportunity for our assistant principals to build the essential skills needed to become strong campus leaders," said El Paso ISD Superintendent Diana Sayavedra. “Through this intensive program, we are investing in the future of our district by ensuring our leaders are fully equipped to guide our schools toward continued success. Like our teachers, our principals and assistant principals are key to driving our mission forward."
El Paso ISD looks forward to developing a strong leadership pipeline that will benefit students, teachers, and the entire school community for years to come.
This initiative is part of El Paso ISD’s broader leadership development strategy, which includes the Thrive and Empower Academies. The Thrive Academy focuses on principal onboarding and equipping leaders for higher-level roles, while the Empower Academy is tailored to assistant principals seeking to expand their leadership skills and prepare for greater responsibilities. Together, these programs foster a culture of growth and excellence across the district.
