(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – November 11, 2024) — Today is Veteran’s Day and students at Wiggs Middle School had a unique opportunity to honor service members through a memorable game of football on Wednesday, October 30 ahead of the holiday. The Wiggs Middle School 8th grade football team took on soldiers from Fort Bliss in a friendly match, bringing together students, soldiers, and families for an unforgettable afternoon of sportsmanship and celebration. Organized through a collaboration between the U.S. Army and the school’s Family, Military, and Community Liaison, the event served as a powerful reminder of the values of service and community.
The game was more than just friendly competition; it embodied community spirit and created lasting memories for the young athletes. “It’s a privilege and honor to take part in this game,” said 1st Lt. Brett Jones. “I see a lot of similarities between Akron, Ohio and El Paso in terms of city size and community feel, and it’s just really good to give back to the community.”
Lisa Guzman, Family, Military, and Community Liaison at Wiggs Middle School emphasized the impact of the event on the students. “It’s nice to create this memory for the students,” she said. “This is something they’re going to be able to take with them after leaving Wiggs Middle School.”
Wiggs Football Coach Fernando Barraza expressed gratitude for the soldiers' participation. “The event was fun for the boys. It was great to have the Army come out—the way they serve our country, we appreciate that,” he shared. “Plus, some of these students have family members in the military, so this is a great event for everyone.” Barraza hopes to make the game an annual tradition, adding, “We already have some of our 7th graders excited to come out next year.”
The game offered students not only a chance to engage in friendly competition but also to learn from the service members they admire. This growing tradition at Wiggs Middle School highlights the values of community, teamwork, and respect for those who serve, making it a fitting celebration in the lead-up to Veteran’s Day.
