(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT — Nov. 18, 2025) — El Paso ISD is proud to announce that Yvonne Guerrero, school nurse at Canyon Hills Middle School, has been named the 2025 Texas School Nurse of the Year by the Texas School Nurse Organization (TSNO). Guerrero earned the honor earlier this month at the annual TSNO Conference in Houston, where she was recognized among the state’s most distinguished school health professionals.
Guerrero first received recognition in May when she was selected as the Region 19 School Nurse of the Year, advancing her to statewide consideration. After a competitive review process, TSNO selected her as the top school nurse in Texas for 2025, an honor that reflects her leadership, dedication, and exceptional service to students, families, and fellow nurses.
For seven years, Guerrero has led the district’s Nurses’ Spirit Committee, organizing morale-boosting initiatives such as holiday celebrations, Nurses Week activities, and community-building events like Nurse’s Night at local sporting venues. Her efforts have helped deepen camaraderie and create a strong sense of belonging among school nurses across El Paso ISD.
Her leadership also extends beyond the district. Guerrero previously served as Secretary for the TSNO Region 19 Board, where she played a central role in coordinating the 2025 Regional Conference attended by more than 50 school nurses. Her attention to detail and thoughtful planning helped elevate the professional development experience for attendees from across the region.
In addition to her leadership roles, Guerrero is highly regarded as a mentor and educator. She routinely serves as a preceptor for university and college nursing students, offering guidance and real-world experience to future health professionals. Within El Paso ISD, she has supported new school nurses and helped train colleagues during last year’s rollout of the district’s updated documentation system, serving as a “super-user” to assist with implementation.
Guerrero’s work reflects the essential role that school nurses play in student well-being, health education, and community support.
“I am truly honored,” Guerrero said. “Being a school nurse is a privilege. Every day we have the chance to support students, comfort families, and make a difference in someone’s life. I’m grateful for my colleagues, my campus, and the district for believing in me. It is the strength of our partnership across the district, working together for every student, that truly makes this possible. This award belongs to all of us and stands as a testament to what we can achieve together."
El Paso ISD congratulates Yvonne Guerrero on being named the 2025 Texas School Nurse of the Year and thanks her for her extraordinary service to the district and the entire school nursing community.
