(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – May 1, 2026) — The cheers have quieted, and the medals have been awarded, but the spirit of determination continues to shine following the conclusion of the 8th Annual Unidos Games.
Held April 30 and May 1, the two-day event brought together hundreds of El Paso ISD student-athletes who took to the field to demonstrate that achievement knows no limits. Through competition, teamwork, and perseverance, students once again made one of the district’s most cherished traditions a memorable success.
"The event has been fun so far," said Dafne, a sixth-grader at Navarrete Middle School. "It's really amazing, everything about it is really amazing."
Since its launch in 2018, the Unidos Games have provided students with disabilities an opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities, build confidence, and represent their campuses with pride. Competitors from across the district participated in a variety of events designed to celebrate skill, effort, and determination.
“The Unidos Games are a reflection of the heart of El Paso ISD,” said Bernadette Baca, Special Education Facilitator. “Watching our student-athletes compete with such joy, pride, and determination reminds us that every student has gifts worth celebrating. This event is about more than athletics, it’s about inclusion, community, and creating opportunities for every child to shine.”

The excitement of this year’s games was also reflected in the official event branding, selected through the 8th Annual Unidos Games Logo Design Contest.
Last month, El Paso ISD recognized Alondra Iniguez of Jefferson Silva High School and Isabela Shiel of Franklin High School, whose winning designs were chosen to represent the 2026 Unidos Games. Their artwork appeared on promotional materials, social media, and the medals awarded to participating athletes.
The creativity shown by the students helped capture the energy and unity of the Unidos Games before the first event even began. Their work is another example of the many ways El Paso ISD students excel in the classroom, through the arts, and on the field.
The success of the Unidos Games was made possible by the support of families, teachers, staff, and classmates who filled the stands to cheer on participants throughout the event.
For many student-athletes, the opportunity to represent their schools and celebrate alongside peers was among the most meaningful moments of the competition.
“Seeing students cross the finish line, receive their medals, and celebrate their accomplishments is what makes this event so special,” Baca said. “The confidence they gain here stays with them long after the games are over.”
As the 8th Annual Unidos Games come to a close, El Paso ISD remains committed to fostering inclusive experiences that empower every student to reach their full potential.
Through events like the Unidos Games, the district continues to celebrate the talents, determination, and spirit that make every student a champion.
