Since its debut in March 2018, the Unidos Games has grown into a cherished districtwide tradition—bringing together families, educators, and students in the spirit of unity and inclusion.

“Unidos Games provides an opportunity for our students to collaborate and gives them a sense of belonging,” said Nelson Ortega, a special education instructor participating in the event for the first time. “Sometimes students feel left out, and events like this help them feel seen and celebrated for their talents.”

Ortega emphasized the level of preparation and dedication students bring to the event. “We prepare them for performance training—we work with them every day, track how they’re doing, and help them improve while staying engaged,” he said.

In addition to supporting his students, Ortega expressed gratitude for the teamwork that makes Unidos possible. “I’m happy to be on a team where everyone wants the students to succeed and is always advocating for them,” he said. “It’s important for every parent and educator to be involved. You don’t have to be in charge of anything—it’s about being united and making sure our students feel welcomed.”

Special Education Facilitators Bernadette Baca and Donna Day said the Unidos Games continues to grow in both size and spirit. “This event is all about celebrating ability,” they said. “It’s inspiring to see the joy on our students’ faces and the support from our schools and families. Every year, the Unidos Games reminds us of what inclusion and community really look like.”

The Unidos Games continues to be a powerful example of how El Paso ISD supports the whole child, ensuring that all students—regardless of ability—have opportunities to shine, grow, and succeed.
