Students will not only participate in structured competitive gaming but also develop essential skills in communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving.

Guillen Middle School Principal Leticia Terrazas said the lab is already igniting excitement among students. “Our students are beyond excited about this lab. It’s more than just a space to play games. It’s a place where they can learn teamwork, build confidence, and discover new opportunities,” said Principal Terrazas. “At Guillen, we want every student to see themselves as leaders and innovators, and this Esports Lab is a powerful way to make that happen.”

The Esports initiative is part of a vision to create 21st-century learning spaces that inspire creativity, expand access to technology, and open new academic pathways for students.

Guillen Middle SchoolEl Paso ISD Board President and District 1 Trustee Leah Hanany praised Guillen’s leadership in paving the way for innovation. “As a school district, we should be focusing on programs that students are interested in, and you can just see the excitement on their faces,” Hanany said. “It’s not just gaming, it’s programming, learning how to use computers, and so many other skills they’ll be able to take with them to college.”

The project was made possible through the support of El Paso ISD’s Information Security & Technology Department, which has been instrumental in launching the program. Assistant Superintendent Manny Verduzco emphasized the long-term vision for the initiative. “Launching the Esports program at Guillen is an important first step in expanding innovative opportunities across El Paso ISD. Esports connects directly to skills in communication, problem-solving, and technology that students will carry into their futures.”

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, guests were invited to tour the lab and watch live demonstrations led by students, showcasing how the program blends competitive gaming with learning.

“I think gaming facilitates creativity, teamwork, and strategic thinking for students of all ages,” said Librarian Lorena Curry. “I’m excited that our district has invested in our campus and our students.” 8th grade student Lizabeth Carpise agreed. “I think every student should have access to an eSports Lab because not a lot of people know this, but they are actually very educational and help build teamwork,” said 8th grade student Lizabeth Zapien. “This is the field I actually see myself doing later in life.”

Guillen Middle SchoolThe new lab is only one part of the transformation underway at Guillen. The campus is embracing innovative programs such as Algebra for All and the Accelerated Campus Excellence (ACE) model, both designed to raise expectations and accelerate student achievement. Under the leadership of Principal Leticia Terrazas, Guillen is cultivating a dynamic learning environment where students are supported academically, socially, and emotionally. Together, these efforts are reshaping Guillen Middle School into a hub of opportunity and excellence for every student.
