(EL PASO INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT – Aug. 14, 2025) — Two exceptional El Paso ISD educators are preparing to represent the district at this year’s Region 19 Teacher of the Year awards, set for Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Starlight Event Center.
Elementary Teacher of the Year Sandra Iglesias of Cielo Vista Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year Mary Bejarano of Hornedo Middle School will stand alongside the region’s best educators, celebrating a shared commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and student success.
Iglesias, known for her warm and imaginative classroom environment, blends creativity with hands-on learning experiences to nurture the whole child. Her approach fosters curiosity, confidence, and a love for discovery in every student she teaches.
Bejarano, affectionately called “Miss B” by her students, is a dynamic reading teacher whose engaging lessons and inclusive classroom culture reflect her personal motto: “Everybody has a VOICE because everybody MATTERS.” She is recognized for inspiring students to believe in themselves and embrace the power of literacy.
Earlier this week, both educators participated in the Region 19 Teacher of the Year Meet and Greet, where they connected with fellow nominees, shared professional insights, and reflected on the importance of the teaching profession.
The Region 19 Teacher of the Year program recognizes educators who exemplify leadership, dedication, and the ability to inspire students of all backgrounds and abilities. Winners will go on to represent the region in the Texas Teacher of the Year competition.
