Student Spotlight: Miranda Smith-Polette - Class of 2023 Alumni

(TRANSMOUNTAIN EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL – January 13, 2026 )

The following story was contributed by the Early College High School Success Center for the University of Texas at El Paso's GTF Scholarship January Newsletter.

Miranda Smith-Polette is a Bachelor of Science student in Geological Sciences whose undergraduate experience reflects a strong commitment to research, exploration, and academic growth. Throughout her time at UTEP, she has served as a tutor at the Miner Learning Center for Environmental Science, completed an internship in Moab, Utah focused on salt tectonics, participated in undergraduate research on geochronology with Dr. J. Chapman, and taken part in an NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates in Hawai‘i studying earthquakes and volcanic activity. She has also expanded her global perspective through study abroad experiences, including time in Bhutan. Miranda credits the GTF Scholarship for providing both meaningful connections within the UTEP community and opportunities for professional development, particularly through workshops that encouraged her to pursue undergraduate research. Looking ahead, she will continue her academic journey by pursuing a PhD program in New Zealand, where she plans to further develop her research interests and contribute to the field of geosciences.

Miranda’s story and career stand as a powerful example of what can be achieved through hard work, dedication, and seizing opportunities. From earning the GTF Scholarship to participating in the Early College High School program here at TMECHS, Miranda made the most of every pathway available to her. She was also a proud member of TMECHS’s Class of 2023 Early Graduate Cohort—an elite group of students who never earned a C in their college coursework. This achievement opened the door to an additional opportunity: taking nine tuition-free credit hours at UTEP during the spring semester of her senior year.

A true success story, Miranda’s journey highlights what’s possible when commitment meets opportunity.
